Yesterday Kerri brought home four books to read. Normally she only brings one, since they are due back the very next day. I asked Kerri why she had four, and this was her answer:
"I want to show some initiative and catch up so I can get a good grade."
I asked her if her teacher had said that or recommended that to her, and she said no. Kerri told me she came up with that idea - and that new big word - all by herself. So I asked her if she knew what "initiative" meant. And she said no, could I please explain it to her.
Kerri has been showing initiative her whole life. So I am not that surprised she knew what the word meant before I ever defined it for her. Sometimes I wonder who is the student and who is the teacher.
Life with Kerri requires initiative.
